Step by Step Introduction to SEO Series # 4 : Back-links Do-follow and no-follow aspects

What are Back-links ?
  • A back-link for a given web resource is a link from some other website (the referrer) to that web resource.
  • Backlinks plays a crucial role in Google Page Rank algorithm and is one of the most important factors for determining that website's search engine ranking
  • Backlinks are also known as  incoming link, inbound link, in-link.
What if I don't trust and don't want Search Engine to calculate the trust and authority of the page from back-links?

  • Assign "nofollow" to the "rel" attribute of an HTML "a"  Element.
For e.g.
<a href=”http://www.google.com/” rel=”nofollow”>Google</a>

What is "nofollow" ?

  • Nofollow is an HTML attribute value used to instruct search engines bots that a hyperlink should not influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine’s index.
  • This concept was introduced by Matt Cutts and Jason Shellen in the year 2005.

Search Engine supporting  "nofollow".
  • Yeah!! Nofollow is supported by all major search engine; However different Search Engine interpret them differently.
  • Most of them  do not use for ranking.
How to allow "dofollow"
  •  By default all the hyperlinks are dofollow.
  • So, we don’t need to do anything to make a link do-follow.
For e.g.

                 <a href=”http://www.google.com/”>Google</a>

What OBL stands for ?
  • Out Bound Link.
Is it good to buy backlinks ?
  • Absolutely no.
  • If you want a risk-free approach to SEO then, no, you should not buy them.
  • The consequence of getting found out is at least a penalty and loss of rank, or at most, a complete removal from the search results.
What is a better alternative instead of buying backlinks ?
  • Plan your SEO strategy incorporated with "Google Adwords".

Happy SEO.
